Habit Change and Habit Forming
What can habit forming do for you to succeed in life? Why should habit forming be part of every life changing plan and of setting any goal? How long does a habit forming process take?
You are having habits that prevent you to succeed in whatever you want to achieve in life. You should find those disturbing habits, make a list of them and replace them with habits that support you to achieve your goals. Then start with the first habit you want to change. You will go through a time of discomfort until you got used to your new habit. This can take a few weeks, in some cases longer.
Habit forming is done when you repeat a thought or action over and over again until you almost think or act automatically the way you have conditioned yourself to. After you have conditioned a new habit you can fall back into the old habit any time. If this happens, you have to start anew forming the habit with which you have replaced the old one and this time it will be faster and easier as the new habit is already set in your brain. It only has to be awakened.
Example: Let us assume that
Before you finish what you have planned for one day, you get lost in reading an article that doesn’t get you any further on your path to accomplish your next goal. – How to solve this problem? Open a new folder and give it the title: “Read Later”. Copy the URL from the title you would love to read and paste it into a word file that you save in to the folder “Read Later” and continue with your work.
You are usually not punctual. You come late to work and late to meetings and you are always arriving being out of breath and come up with a stupid excuse. You have to condition yourself to be on time. 1. If you don’t get up when the alarm rings in the morning, tell yourself in the evening that you will get up the moment you hear the alarm. At the beginning you will need to put effort into it and force yourself getting up. After a few days you will get up with the alarm almost automatically. 2. Getting to work and to meeting on time, take into consideration that there is more traffic at certain times of the day. Take something with you that you can read in case you arrive too early.
Use subliminal recordings. This is a great method to change habits. While you have subliminal recordings play, you go on with your work, while the messages of the subliminals sink into your subconscious mind, which is the control station for all your habits. Subliminal recordings are the easiest way to change and form new habits.
You just don’t get yourself do things better each time. What is the reason for this? Is it that you don’t put enough time into it? Is it that you would have to review, what you have done and make corrections? Or isn’t is that you can’t imagine to do things any better as last time? Try to imagine what you could do better on any task you do. Visualize doing so after you went to bed. Visualize the finished work being a lot better as last time.
You just can’t speak in front of a crowd. At least for the time being you believe that. Visualize that you stand in front of a large crowd and give a speech and hear people applaud after you finished. Do this in the morning right after you woke up and in the evening after you went to bed. During the day, take some time, go into a room where you are alone and not disturbed, talk about a subject that interests you and imagine that a few people listen. If you can speak for a while being along, you can also do it in front of a crowd.
Those are only a few examples. Only you know what habits are holding you back to succeed. Habit forming is a great way to make everything easier.
Whatever you have to do but dislike to do, form a habit doing it and you will soon be doing it automatically without the feeling that you dislike doing it. Question: Do you believe that you enjoy brushing your teeth? Of course not! You would rather do something more joyful, wouldn’t you. But you have been forming a habit to brush your teeth in the morning and in the evening as you were a child. In those days your parents have watched you and made sure that you regularly brush your teeth. Today you don’t think if you like or dislike it. You have been forming a habit.
This is why habit forming is such a great thing. You get things that have to be done carried out almost automatically. Successful people are great in habit forming. For everything that is necessary to achieve success they have formed a habit.
