Own The Stars - Lesson from The Little Prince
“I own quite a few stars,” he said. “But I have heard of kings…” “Kings don’t own, they reign. But how can you own stars?” “They belong to me! I was the first to have the idea that they should belong to someone. So they belong to me.” “That’s enough?” “When you find a diamond, who belongs to no one, he belongs to you. When you are the first to find an island, which doesn’t belong to any one, it belongs to you. If you find an idea that no one had before and patent it, it belongs to you. And I, I own the stars, because no one has thought to own them.” “That is true,” said the little prince. “And what are you doing with them?” “I manage them. I count them and I count them again,” said the business man. “But that is not easy and I am a serious man.” “When I have a silk shawl, I can put him around my throat. When I see a flower, I can pick it. With stars you can do nothing.” “I can put them into a bank.” “What does that mean?” asked the little prince. “I write all the stars on a piece of paper and put the paper into the bank.” “That’s it?” “That’s enough,” said the business man. That is amusing, thought the little prince, but one can’t take this serious. The little prince thought quite differently about the serious things as older people did. “I have a flower,” he said, “and I water it every day. And I own three volcanos, which I clean every day. But you are of no use to the stars.” The business man opened his mouth, but he did not find an answer and the little prince left. Older people are definitely unusual, he said to himself as he continued to travel.
Do you think about what you own and why and what you do with it? Is it of use for you or for anyone? Think about it!
